I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1
What does the lord require of you?
The Lord requires only a few things from us, to be humble, to do justice and to love mercy. Two things that stem from humility are Faith and Surrender. If we are not humble, we would not be able to place our faith in God. And if we do not have faith, it is impossible to surrender to God.
- declare yourself defeated: to declare to an opponent that he or she has won so that fighting or conflict can cease
- give up possession of something: to relinquish possession or control of something because of coercion or force
- give something out of courtesy: to give a seat, position, or office to somebody as a courtesy or as a gesture of goodwill
Now before WE can ever surrender to God…
We have to understand that WE ARE NOT LOSING!
The definition in the dictionary is not always God’s definition. The first definition in the dictionary says that says that we declare OURSELVES defeated. So we need to deal with that lie. We are defeating sin, and the slavery we were caught up in and condemned by, destined to eternal spiritual death. The next definitions make more sense, we need to give up our will and bodies to God. Voluntary control of your life, dreams and ambitions (usually not God given or God centered) and your former way of being aka habits and attitudes (guilt, conviction, disgust, frustration etc.) have got to go!
And lastly, if you really claim to love God, is to give him access to your SELF. You give yourself to God as courtesy. Entirely smitten to God, like a child belongs to his mother, a wife belongs to her husband, a man belongs to his wife, a car belongs to his owner, or land belongs to the landowner. Doing this because He deserves it, not because you have this mentality of owing God something or because you are expecting from Him. Giving your body, your life, your dreams, your will to God as a form of worship, a thanksgiving sacrifice. Remember you are no longer your own.
We all have areas that we need to surrender to God, and sometimes we need to surrender these things daily.
I know that I have experienced the entire spectrum, from resisting God to having secret sin, to keeping God out of certain things and even leaving something on the altar today and picking it back up tomorrow. We all have areas which we surrendered to God: which we placed on the altar, but decided to work out ourselves without God’s interference. For some people this can be an illness, or vice, maybe sexual sin, or others a grudge, but we all battle with things of this nature. But how can we truly surrender, if we are holding on to our own dreams? or holding on to our ways? or our own agenda?
The only way is by being courageous and putting in some effort to believe God. We have to be steadfast, firm in what we believe, believe what we say, and say what we mean. These are the works of our faith, faith without works is dead.
Courage: 1.quality of being brave: the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action
Lord God, some of us are still battling to fully trust you and this is why, no matter what we say, is the reason we resist in giving ourselves away. Help our hearts during these trying times, to keep a good attitude and to love the God who loves us. May our convictions be in your favor and not in the flesh’s ways, which lead to death. May our desire for you increase, and may our minds be renewed to know and believe that you are a good God after all. In Jesus name, Amen.
