The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs to it and is safe and set on high [far above evil]. Proverbs 18: 10

Faith is a strong fortress.
Lailah Gifty Akita

What’s in a name? A name is identification, reputation and make first impressions. Our names reflect on us and tend to be of influence to others, because people sense character and background from just knowing a name. Names also make/give impressions, like language, clothes or hairstyles. I’ve always thought of something peculiar (and funny to me) even as a teenager; I’ve always wondered why anyone would name their children negative things. For example, ‘Dolores’; in Spanish, ‘dolores’ means pains. In my mind, I’ve always imagined something like: “Hi, nice to meet you, I’m Pains“…  maybe I am anal (analytical)… but names like words, can serve as self fulfilling prophecies. My name means FREE, and I love that. What is your name? In Hebrew the word ‘name’ is ‘SHEM‘; translated to English, SHEM means REPUTATION

God’s name is a sure thing, it is holy and it is spiritually all powerful- this is God reputation. The name of the Lord is a strong tower. I’ve written about fortresses and strongholds before, but today I’d like to clarify that God is our stronghold. It is easy to see the word stronghold in a negative connotation, because we always declare that we are to cast down strongholds (and it’s true). But God is our stronghold. The words strong tower, strong hold and fortress can be used interchangeably, because they all represent a strength, height and protection. Historically, a strong tower is known as a place, heavily fortified, built with stone blocks and protected soldiers, their food and equipment. Another interesting things as I meditated on towers, is that they can be seen from far away.

Fortress:

  • a military stronghold, especially a strongly fortified town fit for a large garrison; fortification, fortcastlecitadelblockhousestronghold, strong tower
  • a heavily protected and impenetrable building
  • (figurative) a person or thing not susceptible to outside influence or disturbance

Stronghold:

  • a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack
  • a place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld

(Strong) Tower:

  • a tall narrow building, either freestanding or forming part of a building such as a church or castle.
  • a place of defense; a protection.
  • (figuratively) (of a bird) soar or rise to a great height
  • (figuratively) (of a falcon) so as to be able to swoop down on the quarry; rise to or reach a great height; soar

God has revealed His many names to us, from YHWH (Yahweh, Jehovah, Yahve), to Adonai, El, EL Shaddai, and many others. YHWH was/is Holy, even to the point that Jews would use God’s other names to speak about Him or to Him. YHWH impresses on the fact that God is preeminent (eternal). He told Moses “I AM THAT I AM”; meaning that He is, He was, and will be (eternal). Growing up with Jehovah Witness background, I’ve loved to exalt Jehovah, as a Catholic I acknowledged Jesus, and as an Evangelic Christian I’ve communed with the Holy Spirit. Three entities, One God; for example, Matthew 28:19 specifies all three, ‘baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’.

The Name of the Lord meaning His character and different attributes is a place of safety for us, a surety, a guarantee, undoubtedly. We are safe during the battles and attacks of life. The scripture says that we, the righteous runs into the tower, and are safe! We are able to soar above our enemies, and our troubles, obviously as we take refuge in God’s presence. Knowing the history of strong towers, it is safe to say that all that we need is supplied in God as well, like food, shelter and any other needs we may have. I thought about how the boats which lose their way at sea, look for the lighthouses to guide them back on course; God is this lighthouse tower as well. Do you have people, habits or places that you run to when you are overwhelmed by life? Some run to friends, lovers, recreational activities, travel, to the gym, to the drugstore, to liquor, etc! We should run to our secret place, our prayer closet. In the refuge of God we find peace, strength, hope, joy, wisdom and protection. God will fight for you, comfort you and guide you in the inner man by His spirit.

Declaration:

Jehovah, He is my strong tower, my mighty fortress, the place where I can run and hide. The place of safety, from the wickedness which follows to entrap me. Like the waves which crash on the lighthouse, are the attacks of the enemy against me; but the waves of the enemy disperse when confronted by the walls of my God who protects me. He will lead me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake! I have no need to fret or to be overwhelmed for God is my secret place. He allows and uses adverse situations to bring me into his fortress, so that I may realize that He is my strength and my defender. Jesus is my protection and my rock. I declare this is my season to hide again in God, as He is my fortress.

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, thank you for being such a faithful and unchanging God. I thank you because I know you to be miracle working God, a God who is stable and true. You are matchless, and incomparable, may you be glorified in our lives. I pray for all those people who are being weighed down or tormented by fear, doubt and uncertainty. They may have questions, or concerns that they cannot even put into words, I pray for peace over them. I ask you to take hold of the hearts that are cold, blind and insensitive because of life’s trials; I pray you comfort them, and melt their hearts with your love. I pray for those who need answers, solutions and direction; I pray for clear signs, and strength to wait on your word; because when you say Yes, I really believe NOBODY can say no. In Jesus name, Amen.
