And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. Matthew 2:12
Among the gifts of the Spirit, scarcely is one greater practical usefulness than the gift of discernment. This gift will enable us to distinguish the chaff from the wheat and to divide the manifestations of the flesh from the operations of the Spirit.
Have you ever rejected the voice of the Lord because you expect Him to answer you in your own way? God speaks to us in many distinct ways. He uses people, dreams, visions, his audible voice, the voice of the Spirit, signs and impressions on our hearts. The question is, are we discerning?
God spoke through visions and dreams to the prophets in the OT, the apostles in the NT, Zachariah (John the Baptist’s father) and to Joseph, when Mary was to be pregnant with Jesus our lord. The Lord even gave Cornelius, a pious yet unsaved man a dream. In my journey with the Lord, I have found that God has spoken to me through billboard signs, newspapers and even songs.
We are not to be moved by our emotions or claim that everything/anything is of God, but instead discern. We must discern if the message is from God or from the counterfeit and copy cat, Satan. The Lord will never go against His word and will always give instruction or insight when He speaks. The scriptures say that God speaks, intercedes, commands, teaches and testifies to us through His Holy Spirit. After all, the Holy Spirit is a person.
When we really know someone we know their voice, their scent and mannerisms. We can sense their presence, we know the sound of their footsteps and can even interpret their thoughts because we can read their unspoken gestures and expressions. The scriptures say we have the mind of Christ and only the spirit of God can know the thoughts of God, even the deep things of God. It simply depends how intimate we are with the Lord, to know His thoughts and His voice.
I believe the Lord has been speaking to you, will you receive Him?
Thank you father God for another day filled of your mercy and grace. Thank you for protecting us and directing our hearts toward you. I pray you increase our wisdom and discernment, so that we may continue to be your true sons and daughters of God, as we are led of you. I pray for peace over each mind and heart, and deep conviction of your guidance and instruction. In Jesus name, Amen.
